Problem Solvers: 20 Heavy-Haul Loads in Three Days?

By Fello Logistics

Brokering a carrier for a heavy-haul load is not an easy task. And we’re not complaining. But it takes a lot more than just picking up the phone and telling a carrier to, “Go get it.”

Heavy-haul loads require certain types of equipment, drivers with experience in heavy-haul freight and particular expertise in working with 7-axle and 13-axle trailers. And depending on the situation, you might have to deal with drayage issues, job-site demobilization, transportation worker credentials and issues related to over dimensional cargo.

All in a day’s work for us! But to be sure, taking care of a heavy-haul load is an involved process.

So how would you handle it if you had to take care of 20 heavy-haul loads in just three days? Not only do you have to do everything mentioned above, you also have to make sure you’ve got carriers available to take the freight.

This is a challenge that has presented itself to Fello many times, and each time we’ve aced it. Here’s how:

First, we maintain a very strong and extensive carrier base with heavy-haul experience and the right equipment for the job – and drivers with heavy-haul experience, too! It’s a deep roster of talent, because what our clients need, our clients get.

Second, we keep our carriers ready. They know it’s a priority for us to get them back on the road with full loads as quickly as possible after they complete a delivery, so they expect to be redeployed quickly.

Third, our team understands all the potential issues with heavy-haul freight, and we work through our checklist very efficiently. When a problem comes up, we know who can take care of it so the client isn’t delayed, and we get on the phone to make it happen.

In these specific situations – with that many loads having to go in just a few days – we deployed multiple team members working through different carriers. We coordinated with everyone from shippers to dock foremen to warehouse operators and crew supervisors. Critically, our people worked well as a team. They couldn’t be stepping on each other or doubling up on the same resources. Everyone at Fello had to know what everyone else at Fello was doing.

These were intense days. And triumphant ones. We realize it will almost certainly happen again. And when it does, we’ll be ready, because we’ve already proven to ourselves and to our clients that we know what works.
