Tristan McCutchan is a Fello carrier account manager who works with the network of carriers for our shipper clients. Though he didn’t grow up immersed in the world of trucks, he was surrounded by the hard work and dedication of a six-generation family farm in Healdsburg, California, where cattle graze and prunes thrive.
“My family’s been there a long time,” he said.
As much as Tristan enjoyed the atmosphere of California wine country, he had an interest in learning about marketing and entrepreneurship, which led him to earn degrees in both at California State University Chico.
Tristan started his career in sales and marketing with a staffing firm, but it wasn’t long before Fello CEO Dillon Blesi personally recruited him to join Fello in a similar role. Shortly after that Tristan realized he could use his communication skills to be effective working with the carrier network.
“Good communication is definitely key to being successful working with our carriers,” Tristan said. “Having a good track-and-trace team, checking on your carriers to make sure they’re going to be on time, having accurate ETAs for pickup and delivery, and making sure nothing happens to the truck, like flat tires. Communication is the key aspect of this industry. And that’s what makes Fello strong – good communication both with the clients and the carriers.”
In his role, Tristan serves as a primary point of contact for carriers, working daily to build solid relationships with them and ensure tasks are executed for mutual benefit.
A keen strategic planner, Tristan recognizes that even though planning is critical, this industry requires the ability to sometimes turn on a dime.
“We work really well alongside each other to accomplish a common goal,” Tristan said. “And it’s really rewarding, when customers have a dire freight need – they’ve got to have a shipment out a certain day and delivered a certain day – like pieces of a product that need to be built on an assembly line for example. We may need to act quickly and follow everything very closely so they can keep manufacturing and keep their business growing.”
Coming into logistics from the staffing industry, Tristan found it rewarding to learn about the unique needs of various trucking companies – and quickly understood how he could build strong relationships by working with carriers to meet their needs as well.
“Now I have happy drivers with repeated lanes,” he said.
Today, Tristan lives in Idaho, where he makes his way to the mountains for snowboarding as often as he can – as well as dirt biking in the summer. And as much as possible, he is accompanied by his black lab Kenai, who is about to turn five years old. His passion for building relationships and ensuring smooth operations continues to make a significant impact at Fello, helping both clients and carriers thrive.
