How We Provide the Extra Attention Needed for LTL Freight Shipping

By Fello Logistics

All freight requires caution, strategic positioning and the right kind of packaging – among other things. These are the details our team is trained to pay attention to with every load.

However, when we’re dealing with Less Than Truckload freight, our team understands that an entirely different level of attention to detail is needed.

Consider: Since an LTL vehicle contains many items from many shippers, you’re most likely looking at a wide variety of different types. What if one item with sharp ends is placed next to a fragile item in a cardboard container? What if a large flat item limits the space available for other items? What if the nature of the different items makes stacking a problem?

The Fello professionals who work with LTL shipments understand they must pay attention to issues like this with every shipment.

Here are some of the things we do at Fello to ensure the safety and timely delivery of LTL freight:

  1. We work with carriers who have proven their reliability in the LTL environment. This doesn’t eliminate our need to ensure the details are correct, but it’s much less likely that there will be other issues – because our LTL carriers are experienced and understand how to handle various kinds of freight and have above average reliability and service levels.
  2. We make sure there is a plan for unusual freight shapes and sizes. This is sometimes called “ugly freight,” and it describes any kind of load that doesn’t fit with standard crates or pallets and is difficult to load securely. We work with our carriers to make sure they ensure these items’ safety and that of the items around them in the truck.
  3. We stay in regular contact with the LTL carriers to make sure pickups are on schedule. If there are any issues, our team is trained to quickly come up with solutions. We also make sure our clients get timely updates on any developments so they know what’s happening – and what we’re doing about it.
  4. We make sure perishable or fragile items have the packaging they need, and are loaded carefully so they are not damaged by other items.
  5. We make sure hazardous materials are not dangerously intermingled with other items that shouldn’t be sharing a load with them.
  6. We make sure to account for extra time and labor that might go along with an LTL shipment. Our carriers are experienced with these details, so we can work with them to plan for every aspect and let our clients know what to expect.
  7. We let our clients know when LTL may not be their best answer. LTL is less costly, but it often takes longer and involves many stops. Sometimes a full truckload traveling from Point A to Point B is the best option. Whatever your ideal situation is, we will find it.

LTL shipping can be great for certain loads, especially when saving time is less important than saving money. Shippers can be confident when working with Fello on LTL shipping. We will always be on top of every detail to ensure a smooth journey and safe delivery for your freight.
